Captain's Quarters
The Captain's Quarter is a Garden Level accomodation, overlooking 30 miles of rugged Mendocino Coastline to the south and the Gray Whale migratory paths to the west.
Traditionally the Captain's Quarters — whether on land or at sea — was situated to keep them comfortable and informed as to the state of the Sea. Likewise, the Captain's Quarter's queen size feather bed abutts against a brick wall that forms the foundation for the fireplace in the main house. From this position you can watch both the sun and moon set over the Pacific. A large Vermont Castings stove occupies the tiled southwest corner and is capable of turning the accomodations into a sauna. The crackling fire is surrounded by ocean views to the south and west. A fold out couch can accomodate a child or friend.
The two person shower has a glass block column that highlights a tile painting of coastal flowers. Since all the windows face the Ocean, the Captain's Quarters is flooded with both the sounds of the surf and its inhabitants. The CD player may be required to 'drown out the sounds of the sea'. Seal colonies are to the south and north of the Captain's Quarters and when the sea breeze is right you would think their distinctive barks were coming from just outside your window rather than at the base of the 200' cliff. As you sink into the featherbed, the combined sounds of the surf, seal's bark and crackling fire will lull you back to a more gentle time, when nature set the tempo.
Day or night the mile of private bluff top trails provide a constantly changing panorama. From certain vantage points you can observe the picturesque waterfall tumbling down the cliff or if you are an early riser, catch the first light of dawn and fleeting glimpses of Lynx and Ring Tailed Ferrets.
At day's end, the bluff edge trail catches the last rays of the sun and is an excellent place to witness the evening parade of planets across the star filled Mendocino night sky. The lack of neighbors and light pollution is reminiscent of the high desert. There currently is a small telescope available for your use. If your interests include star gazing, I recommend a visit during one of the annual meteor showers. It is worth noting that even with a good pair of binoculars, at the right time, you can see the 4 moons of Jupiter!
Given the rapidly vacilliating coastal climate be sure to bring along a wide range of clothing, preferably cothing that you can layer or peel off if you over heat while trying to keep up your kite in the stiff breezes which frequent the Mendocino Coast.
The real uniqueness of the Captain's Quarters is the pristine beauty of the Mendocino coast, with acres of California native flowers, a mile of trails, with hidden benchs and private places to roast a marshmallow or savor the fruits of Alexander Valley, the real celebration we offer surrounds your accomodations. The Captain's Quarters offer an ocean view from the top-floor bedroom, and beautiful views of the gardens from the other rooms. If you're looking for a more intense ocean view, the Garden Cottage offers complete ocean views from all rooms.
